Overtown is a neighborhood located within the city of Miami. With the large volume of construction occurring in the area as the railroad was built, African Americans made up a significant portion of the labor force during that time. Segregation laws that were in effect in the late 1800s dictated that an area should be developed for people of African descent. As such, the neighborhood of Overtown was created. From its inception, it was an active community with plenty of amenities for families. It also appealed to businesses, who set up shop along the many streets of Overtown. The neighborhood soon added schools, hospitals, and a library. Heavily influenced by African American culture, it was known for its nightlife, often drawing residents and visitors alike to its many shows and events. Famous entertainers, such as Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Josephine Baker would stay in the hotels of Overtown when performing in other areas of Miami.
The neighborhood continued to grow and prosper until the 1950s. During this decade, major road construction moved Overtown off of the main routes, significantly cutting off access to and from the neighborhood. This forced almost 80% of its population of 50,000 to leave. As residents left the city, businesses began to close. This caused a significant economic decline, which lead to high crime and unemployment, which the area often characterized as a "ghetto." In the 1990s, there was a renewed interest to develop the community as a means to stop its continued economic decline. The building of a major stadium and the opening of a mass-transit station helped to bring funds back into the economy. Officials have continued their quest for improvement by building community gardens and renovating historic buildings that once captured the magic of Overtown. The population of Overtown, as reported by the 2010 census, was 6,762 of which a majority of the residents are African American.
