Often referred to as "Little San Juan", the community known as Wynwood was established in the 1950s with the influx of immigrants from Puerto Rico. During the years, however, the community slowed and soon became largely industrial. Starting in the early 2000s, renewed interest brought significant new investment and development into the community. Over time, this historic community was transformed from a series of warehouses to a thriving art and entertainment district. Keeping the roots of its Puerto Rican residents, the buildings along the streets of the community were adorned with brightly colored murals. Warehouses were renovated and soon became restaurants, breweries, specialty boutiques, and clubs. In 2009, real estate developer, Tony Goldman, brought in a group of artists to create the Wynwood Art District, which features a rotating, outdoor display of street art.
Today, Wynwood is known for its thriving art district. The community is home to several artists who share their art through several galleries and private collections. Thousands of visitors are drawn to the annual Art Basel festival each year. The community also has a fashion district consisting of several well-known retail stores and distributors. In 2011, a movie and television production studio was built. Most recently, the Midtown Miami project brought the addition of anchor retail stores, such as Target and Loehmanns, as well as office complexes and condominiums.
Combined with its sister community, Edgewood, there are 15,149 residents who call the area home. The community is racially mixed with residents who are Hispanic, African American, or white. Over the years, Wynwood families have seen their median household income rise to $37,205.
