Established by W.A. Larkins back in 1897, South Miami was largely considered an undeveloped wilderness. Larkins built his home and started a small dairy, constructing a post office a year later. Upon the completion of extension between Miami and Homestead in 1906, he bought more land and built the first general store in the area. Originally established as a town, South Miami grew in the 1920’s, but was significantly impacted by the hurricane in 1926. The years that followed were turbulent, as the town encountered endured dissention among its residents and financial issues resulting from the hurricane and lack of federal aid. The town successfully petitioned to change its name and status from a town to a city, in the hopes that it would provide more federal aid when needed.
Although it continued to struggle, the city of South Miami saw its financial condition turn around after World War II, as its growth started to climb. Today, South Miami has a population of 12,207, with a relatively young median age of 39. The population is a mix of Hispanic, African American, and white residents, with almost half of its population speaking Spanish in the home. The city has a vibrant downtown area that is filled with shops, restaurants, and historic buildings. South Miami is a family-friendly community with residential homes, schools, and parks.
