The City of HomesteadHomestead is a small sized city located in south Miami Dade. It is the second oldest city in the Miami Dade County. It was incorporated in 1913. The name “Homestead” originates from the shipments of goods that were sent through the Florida East Coast Railway extension to Key West. The area had opened up to “Homesteading”. In the case of those who had not taken up arms against the U.S could apply to buy and own land at little or no cost. The camp at the end had no name, and the engineers who were mapping the areas shortened the papers consigned as “Homestead Country” to just “Homestead.”
The population is estimated to be at 60,000 since the 2010 census, a dense 66% percent of that being White or Caucasian (including white Hispanic). 51% of people within homestead speak Spanish as a first language, while 43% used English, the last 4% using Haitian Creole.
Much of Homestead’s media is served by the Miami market for local radio and television, but it does have its own newspaper, the South Dade News Leader. It also has a local T.V show called “Inside Homestead TV”. It is a community service show. Homestead has recently opened a new city hall, a 75-foot tall landmark built in such a way that it can withstand a category 5 hurricane. To this day the impact of Hurricane Andrew, which devastated Homestead in 1992, can still be felt in the way buildings are constructed.
